Why is MDDHosting offering "Unlimited" Disk Space and Bandwidth? Unlimited isn't Infinite!

The short and simple answer is to simplify your life. You won't have to worry about your disk space or bandwidth usage so you can focus on doing what you do best - building and operating your websites. "Unlimited" does not mean infinite - it just means no arbitrary limit.

In the past we didn't offer "unlimited" disk space simply because we were limited by our hardware. Each server had a finite number of drive bays and once the available bays were full there was no way for us to add additional storage to the server. Offering "unlimited" disk space on hardware limited by the physical drives installed internally was not ideal so we avoided it to ensure reliability.

What Changed?

We now use Highly Available storage platform, powered by StorPool. This gives us the capability to allocate storage to any server we need as we need it as well as the ability to scale out our storage without impacting existing services. In short - we're no longer limited by the server hardware and the number of drive bays therein.

What about bandwidth?

In early 2016 we invested heavily into upgrading our infrastructure including upgrading all server connectivity to 20 GBPS [20,000 Megabit/Second]. To put this into perspective our entire network operated on 2 GBPS [2,000 Megabit/Second] of connectivity for over 8 years. Our entire network as well as our servers are more redundant and robust permitting us to safely offer unlimited bandwidth without concerns about exhausting our connectivity.

1.) What does "Unlimited" mean?

Unlimited Disk Space and Bandwidth means that during the normal operation of your sites you will not need to worry about whether you will run out of disk space or bandwidth.

There are still other aspects of operating your sites that you will need to consider. If your sites are poorly optimized and are causing issues for others on your shared server (such as using excessive amounts of CPU, RAM, or Disk I/O), we may ask you to upgrade to a Virtual Private Server.

We will do our best to advise you in optimizing your sites but cannot make any promises in this regard. While we don't like having to ask customers to upgrade - keep in mind how you would feel if the performance of your site was degraded due to other users you have no control over. We don't want your sites to suffer as a result of others and we don't want others to suffer as a result of your sites.

2.) What limits are there on "Unlimited" storage?

While we do not place arbitrary limits on your total disk usage there are other limits that do apply to all accounts:

  • CPU
  • RAM
  • Disk I/O
  • Entry Processes (EP)
  • Total Processes (TP)
  • Inodes (File Count)

These limits are to protect the server as a whole as well as you from other customers and vice versa. For example without these limits an account with excessive inodes could cause File System damage or a site using up all of the CPU on the server could take the entire server offline.

3.) "Unlimited" Databases

We do not arbitrarily limit the number of databases you can create, the number of tables, or the total amount of MySQL data your account contains. We do ask that you keep your databases optimized and try to keep them smaller than a gigabyte or two if at all possible.

4.) "Unlimited" Domains

You may host as many domains as you desire within your account. You should be aware that every site takes resources to operate (CPU, RAM, Disk I/O) and that the more sites you add to your account the greater the chances are that you will exhaust your resources.

5.) What can't I do with "Unlimited" Disk Space?

The simple answer is anything where the primary function is to use disk space or bandwidth. A few examples of prohibited uses:

  • File Upload / Sharing / Backup / Mirroring / Distribution / Archive sites.
  • Sharing your account resources whether for free or for pay.
  • Image Dumps / File Dumps.
  • Storing copyrighted material of which you are not the owner.
  • Storing content or media that is not related to an active website such including but not limited to backups and archives.

MDDHosting reserves the right to remove content stored on our servers that violates any of the terms of the Unlimited Policy or our Terms of Service. MDDHosting has sole discretion to determine what does and does not constitute a violation of any of our policies.

6.) That sounds like a lot of limits on "Unlimited"!

The limits on our "Unlimited" plans apply to our "Limited" plans as well, however, we wanted to be up-front and transparent about the limits you could potentially run into. This policy is primarily aimed at those that wish to sign up with the intent to use as much storage as possible by backing up their computers, their other hosting accounts, storing their music or video collections, etc. all of which are not permitted.

The vast majority of our customers have never had major issues with the limits we have put in place, however, those that have generally were lacking optimization of their sites or were simply trying to run a site on shared hosting that needs more power such as a VPS. While we are not limiting your total disk usage or bandwidth you are still on a shared server and must share server resources. This policy helps ensure we provide a fair service to all of our customers.

Should you have any questions about this policy or if you're unsure if your sites will violate any of our policies do please reach out to our Sales Department and we will be more than happy to advise you.
